Mastering Boho Chic

July 29, 2010

The bohemian style has emerged into the fashion world repeatedly in the past 50 years.  The original bohemian style evolved through nomadic artists travelling across Europe and wearing pieces that they found, made or borrowed along the way.  Modern day boho style incorporates the same fashion mentality.  This trend allows you to incorporate many different styles into your look.  You can mix a skirt your mother had since the 60’s, with a modern blouse, a vintage scarf, and earrings from Forever 21, all into one look.  The main precaution you must look out for when putting together a bohemian outfit is over doing it.  You have to achieve the perfect balance between messiness and simplicity.  But this look, more than any other, gives you room to experiment with your individual style.  Below are a few hippie inspired looks from Shoegasm so you’ll look boho-chic from head to toe.

Unleashing the Cage Heel

July 28, 2010

The cage heel can be described as the combination of the gladiator sandal, the strappy sandal and the bootie.  Caged heels can give your look an oomph of sex appeal and power.  But, to avoid falling into the dominatrix category, here’s a couple of tips on how to rock the cage heel.  Because the cage heel brings all the attention to your feet, you want to keep the rest of your outfit simple.  Pair the architecturally fearless shoe with solid and simple silhouettes.  A pencil skirt with a flowy top or fitted blazer is a perfect outfit to pair with these shoes.  Try to stay away from printed pieces so you can keep all of the attention at your feet.

7 Fashion Staples that Every Woman Should Own

Before any fashionista can hit hit the run-way running, she’s got to arm her closet with some wardrobe basics:

1. Classic trench-Choose a well tailored option in a flattering color that goes in at your particular waste-yes we all have different wastes.  Also, opt for one that hits right at, or below your knee.  Avoid double-breasted styles because they can make you look larger than you really are.

2. The Black Pump- Whether you’re off to work or out on the weekend with your favorite girlfriends, a black pump is the perfect shoe to add to almost any outfit.  Choose one with a reasonable heel, but have fun with the style.  Patent leather is always our favorite.

3. The Button Down- A fitted, crisp, collared button down shirt is a definite necessity in any fashionista’s closet.  This versatile shirt can go with anything from a pencil skirt for work, to over a bikini on the beach

4. A Stylish Pair of Flats-Make sure they are comfortable and fit you to a Tee. After the fit is perfect, find a pair with a little edge. Anything from broaches, to studs, to peep toes will allow your own personal style to shine through.

5. A Black Blazer- a well fitted blazer is the perfect cherry on a fashion sundae. I always go to it for the final piece to put everything together. If I feel like I’m showing too much skin, I’ll simply slip on my blazer and go from their.

6. The “Damn, I look Good in these “Jeans- Everyone needs a pair of jeans that makes their bootie look fine. Hourglass girls should go for a pair of bootlegs where boy-shaped girls can opt for a skinny jean. But remember, as long as you feel great, nothing else matters.

7. The Tote- Every fashionista needs a tote to put together a suit or dress. Pick out a classy, roomy, leather tote to tie in your whole outfit. Not to mention you’ll have a spot for your keys, cellphone, and lip gloss. Job well done!

A Splash of Color

July 26, 2010

The summer is a time for celebrating life.  It’s a time for going on vacation, meeting up with friends, eating lavish foods, and of course, dressing a little more funky and fun.  One of the best things about Summer fashion that I enjoy experimenting with is color.  It’s time to put away your winter blacks and grays, and dig into some colorful pieces. Summer 2010 is calling for many green based colors, but also some pinks, blues, browns, and neon colors. So, although there seems to be only a month left of summer, make it count! Put a splash of color into your summer wardrobe.

The Modern Day Flip Flop

July 22, 2010

It’s impossible to go a summer without slipping your feet into a pair of flip-flops.  The thong sandals used to be a beach or pool only shoe that was deemed inappropriate for office or evening attire.  But, recently the flip-flop has become revamped and is now accepted as a fashionable form of footwear.  Flip flops now incorporate studs, straps and beads and are a far cry from the foamy, plastic, slip on sandals that used to only be available at drug stores and beach stores.  On that note, embrace the modern day flip flop—a casual sandal that screams “I don’t have to try to look this good.”

No Pedicure? No Problem

July 21, 2010

Usually, summer shoes are meant to show off your pedicure. June through August include the few weeks out of the year when you can actually let your toes breath.  But, let’s be honest.  Even the most primped women have days when they really can’t show off their toes—or shouldn’t.  You know who you are.  I myself have fallen victim to it many-a-times and there’s nothing worse than seeing a gorgeous sandal with some not so gorgeous feet inside.  So for those days when you’ve been a little lazy with your pedicure upkeep, do us all a favor, and opt for shoes that are either closed toe or peep toe.  Even when you’re pedicure is lacking, you can usually pull off a peep toe.  Enjoy browsing our section of no-pedicure-friendly shoes and be sure to scour our website for some more!

In the summer, pair booties with short shorts.  These Chelsea Crew “Cyrus” booties in tan for $59.99, would look great on sun-kissed legs.

These, Report "Carrie"flats in bronze for $59.95 would go great with anything from skinny jeans, to shorts, to a sleek pencil skirt.

Rock these Jeffery Cambell "Vera"wedges for $109.95 with a hot summer fitted dress.

These versatile Chelsea Crew "Venetia" closed toe sandals in gold for $39.99 would look lovely with a summer skirt, dress or pair of shorts.

Goth-Chic

July 15, 2010

Signature Gothic shoes often include a platform and have anything from lace to buckles to studs.  Gothic-style shoes have the ability to make your legs appear longer and thinner because of the chunky style and height that they embody.  To help pull off the goth look without looking like you belong at the food court of a mall, or outside of a Twilight premier, pair your gothic shoes with a more subdued outfit.  Blazers, mini dresses with opaque tights, a trench, or skinny jeans are perfect pieces to add to your gothic look.  Also, incorporate colors such as black, silver, dark grays and blues to your wardrobe.  And if you really want to embrace your inner vamp, pair your look with a deep red stained lip.  You’ll be sure to have heads turning for your new goth-goddess alter ego!
