What Spring Couture Shows Mean for Your Wardrobe

The spring 2012 Haute Couture shows are in Paris! For the lucky few who get to attend this exclusive event, it’s one of the highlights of the seaosn: and for the rest of us, the photos and videos offer a peek inside one of the most fun and fascinating parts of the fashion season.

If you think some of the shows at Fashion Week in New York or Milan are crazy, you’d be shocked to see what shows up at a couture show. That’s because couture is meant to be literally wearable artwork, made specifically for the runway. Some pieces certainly look wearable, while others (definitely) do not. No one expects to see one of Armani’s feathery creations on a street style blog anytime soon: but that’s part of what couture shows are all about. Dior and Valentino: Both of these fashion houses are known for producing gowns with high drama, classic silhouettes and lots of romance: at couture shows, all of these elements get played to the max. Some of Dior’s dresses this season (below center) definitely look wearable (who WOULDN’T want that dress?). But what we’re looking for here are things to take away for the coming season. Since the silhouettes here are typical for these designers, what we’re looking at here are the colors. Confirmation that the white trend is definitely prominent for this spring? Yes, I think so….

Versace: True to form, Versace delivered a sexy, pumped-up collection of skin-tight dresses with a Space Age flair. The bright neon color palette presiding in parts of this collection was one of the slightly extreme elements here: think of the bright yellows and greens we’re seeing trending for this spring, turned up just a little more. What can we take away from this collection? We couldn’t decide right away: but the retro hairstyles that corresponded to the collection are probably the biggest takeaway for us!

…We have no words for this one. Alexis Mabille was clearly having some fun here. This is what we mean by taking artistic license and running (to the garden) with it!
