Oh, Dahhhling, You Look Mahhhvelous!

One of my favorite classic style is the beatnik look from the ’50s: there are so many ruffles, patterns, necklaces, and layering out there that sometimes you just want to throw on some black and hit the streets. What I love most about the style is that it manages to look so beautiful and timeless, without giving up its simplicity–think Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face.”

Start off with these BDG Super Stretchy Sateen Cigarette pants in black from Urban Outfitters ($29) They come in four other colors, too!

THE essential for anyone going for the beatnik look.  And, as someone who actually has these pants and is not blessed with long, stick-thin legs, I have to say that not only do these pants actually stretch perfectly, they make my legs look five miles long.

While it’s easy to just go with a plain black shirt and be done with it, my other favorite thing about beatnik style is how it tweaks menswear for women.  Match your cigarette pants with a collared shirt, like this plain white Fab Woven LS shirt (also comes in a pretty blue) from Forever 21 ($11.50)

If you’re feeling flashy or want to add some more femininity to your duds, wrap around your waist this skinny patent-leather belt from J. Crew ($29.50), which accentuates your waist and adds a little bit of flair to this simple ensemble.

Add to your feet our Chelsea Crew “Rye” loafers in black or dark green ($69.99)

Instead of normal ballet flats, go a bit more menswear with these vintage-inspired shoes that scream classic simplicity. Wear them with these Turncuff Anklet socks from Hue ($6 or 3 for $15) in either black or white to really get a striking vintage look.
